It seems as though everyone in the story has a secret to keep and they all manage to confide in Luke. Set in the late summer and early fall of 1952, its story is told through the eyes of seven-year-old Luke Chandler, the youngest in a family of cotton farmers struggling to harvest their crop and earn enough to settle their debts. A Painted House is a February 2001 novel by American author John Grisham. The dock workers live under the fear of Johnny Friendly, the leader of the corrupt mob run union. He co-authored the letter with author ; the pair contacted various public figures from Mississippi for support. When Luke sees Cowboy, one of the Mexicans, later murder Hank and toss his body into the river, Cowboy threatens to kill Luke's mother if Luke tells anyone what he saw. I read this some time ago. It is full of suspense, drama and humor and there is not a lawyer in site. Even though there were a couple of pretty harsh moments in the book I think I would have to call this a 'feel good' story. Realizing he didn't have the right stuff for a pro career, he shifted gears and majored in accounting at Mississippi State University. And there is surely no reason that every book coming out of the South has to have the issue at its core. Sure I would have loved to keep going or have a sequel. Cowboy as Luis Esteban Garcia.

This time around, it was a bestseller. It could be a 'good crop. I consider John Grisham the king of character development, and this book is full of it. The story takes place over the next two months as these characters interact and pick cotton. I was pleasantly surprised by the way he told this beautiful story. The events of that summer are not light and frivolous. His reading was not to my taste.
